12 Things to think about when choosing your wedding venue...
Choosing your wedding venue is definitely one of the biggest and most important decisions that you make during the wedding planning process. There are so many things to think about and it can make viewings quite overwhelming! Below is a checklist of the main things to think about whilst you are deciding!
1. Package Prices
If you are on a budget, this is one of the first things to keep in mind. You don't want to get your heart set on a venue that you can't afford! Take a look on the venue's website or ask them for a copy of their brochure to get a good idea of their prices.
Deciding on a location means that you have already narrowed down the search! Do you want to get married close to home? Or maybe abroad? Do you want a city wedding? A countryside wedding or even a large manor house? Bare in mind that if you want to get married abroad or even across the country, it might be difficult for your guests to get there.
Find out a venue's minimum and maximum numbers for a wedding. Write up a rough guest list so that you have a rough idea of numbers to go on whilst searching for your venue. There's no point in looking at venues who won't be able to accommodate all of your guests!
4. Marriage License
If you're having your ceremony in a church then you won't have to worry about this one, but if you are planning on having a civil ceremony then make sure that your chosen venue is licensed!
5. Exclusive Use
Exclusivity means something different to every venue. It might mean that you are the only wedding that day however members of the public will still have access. It could also mean you get the whole building o yourself, but there may be an extra charge attached. Make sure you do your research and ask all the right questions to avoid miscommunication.
6. Wedding Coordinator
Does the venue have a wedding planner or coordinator to help you on the day? How heavy will their role be? Will they help you with planning or just be around to help on the day itself. If you are happy to do all of the planning yourself then this might not be important to you, but if you want a day that's completely hassle free then make sure you find out!
7. Catering Options
Do you want to source your own catering company? Most venue have their own caterers. If this is the case then usually you are only allowed to have food and drink supplied by the venue. Some venues might have a catering company that they work with who you will need to get in contact with or other venues might have nothing fixed at all and you will be free to source your own.
8. Time limits
Make sure you ask each venue what time you can party until. If you are planning on having an 'all nighter' then make sure that the music can play and the bar will be open as long as you want it to. You don't want to lose your glass slipper at midnight!
Make sure you find out if there are any restrictions on decorations. Some venues are happy for you to do whatever you like as long as you don't damage the building. Others are more strict about what you can put up on the walls. Also make sure you find out which decorations are included and supplied by the venue, then you can plan any extra bits you might to bring. It's also a good idea to check if you can decorate the venue the day before or if you will need to come in on the wedding morning.
Have a look on the venue's social media sites to find reviews from other brides, it gives you a good idea of what to expect!
Lots of guests will probably want somewhere to stay after the wedding, especially if they have traveled from out of town. Find out if your venue offers accommodation or has a hotel down the road. It's also a good idea to find out if they offer discount for wedding guests. If they don't have accommodation you will have to start looking at taxi prices!
12. Grounds Limitations
Check with the venue which parts of their grounds you are allowed to use. You might see a fantastic photo spot, only to be told that it's out of bounds! Sporting venues like golf clubs are especially important to ask.
Now go and start searching for the perfect venue for you! Take this list and cross things off if you have to!
